Despite significant research progress, treatment of the disease needs to be drastically improved. Drug therapy (chemotherapy), radiotherapy and bone marrow transplant are accompanied by a number of serious side effects. The level of toxicity required to be effective in destroying the disease can sometimes have a devastating effect on a young body, both in the long and short terms. These side effects can include sickness, hair loss and a weakening of the immune system. In the long term, resultant complications can include heart problems and infertility.
